Tragedy struck a 9/11 family for a second time when the daughter of one of the hijacked pilots was killed in a suspicious blaze in New Jersey yesterday.
Wendy Burlingame, 32, and her two dogs died when flames ripped through her 10th-floor apartment in Guttenberg, Hudson County.
Burlingame was the daughter of American Airlines pilot Charles (Chick) Burlingame, whose plane crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.
"It's just an extreme tragedy," said Tim Sumner, who knew Wendy Burlingame from the 9/11 Families survivor group. "It's an amazing blow to that family."
Wendy Burlingame's aunt, Debra Burlingame, a member of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation board, was too heartbroken to speak last night.
The fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. in the Galaxy Towers apartment Burlingame shared with her fiancé, Kevin Roderick.
Neighbors said Burlingame moved into the apartment overlooking the Hudson River about a month ago. Roderick escaped the fire.
Firefighters battled the stubborn blaze for about three hours before bringing it under control. Firefighters found Burlingame's body in a hallway between the kitchen and a bedroom, investigators said.
"It is suspicious at this point because the cause and origin have not been established," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward De Fazio said.
De Fazio said the fire damaged neighboring apartments. A neighbor reported hearing a commotion coming from Burlingame's apartment just before the fire alarms in the building sounded.

Wendy Burlingame's death was being investigated as a suspicious death, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

Her live-in boyfriend, whose name was not released by authorities, was also in the apartment when the fire started shortly before midnight Monday, investigators said.

According to investigators, the boyfriend told them that he and Burlingame had tried to extinguish the fire with water from a sink. When tried to flee, the boyfriend made it into the hallway, but accidentally shut and locked the front door before realizing that Burlingame was not right behind him. He wasn't able to get back in.

As firefighters rushed into the 44-story building to put out the blaze, the building resident assigned as fire warden for the night found the boyfriend outside the apartment door, visibly shaken, and led him to safety

Now there is evidence suggesting F-16's from the 113th Fighter Squadron based at Andrews AFB near Washington DC. On July 31, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz thanked members of the 113th. "Minutes after [Flight 77] struck the Pentagon on Sept. 11, the squadron had planes in the air looking for a second jetliner [Flight 93] that ultimately crashed in Pennsylvania."

First, an FAA employee in Nashua NH told the Nashua Telegraph that "an F-16 fighter closely pursued" Flight 93. Second, a military aide told Dick Cheney "There is a fighter in the area. Should we engage?" Cheney said yes - 3 times. Now researcher Robb Magley reports that a seismograph only 60 miles from where Flight 93 crashed recorded a sonic boom at 9:22 a.m., no doubt from a military jet. But which base sent the plane? Magley argues it came from the 180th Fighter Wing in Toledo OH, which was definitely scrambled on 9-11 - the Pentagon says they took off at 10:17, but an eyewitness saw them at 9 am. This only deepens the mystery of the December death of the 180th's 44-year-old commander of operations Pete Raffa."


I know his name was changed in the SSDI, too, by a name change lawyer, (I have the name and case info somewhere) after his death.

A man who was flying at the time of 9-11 said:
"I was on a flight on a American Airlines flight on 9-11 from Cleveland to Denver via Chicago. We left at 9 am I believe. We were in the air a short time and the pilot came on and said, "there is a national emergency and we have been told to land immediately at the nearest airport. We do not know the details but we should learn when we land". The nearest airport was Toledo which we just passed so we dropped down out of the sky, landed and rolled along the runway then parked next to another plane that just landed. We were asked to walk off of the plane and go into the terminal building. It wasn't very large just a few gates.

Soon after I saw an F-16, yes I know what they look like, take off from nearly the same runway as we had landed. After that we were told by a cop to go downstairs to the ticketing area. There was a big TV on that everyone was transfixed on. One of the towers was burning. No one knew what was going on but soon after, we witnessed live, the second plane hit the WTC. I don't know the timing of these events, but the single F-16 I saw take off left well before the second plane hit the WTC. Someone said they were just National Guard and would not be involved in anything important. But your web site makes me wonder. I later drove near where the plane crashed in Pennsylvania last October and I remember people saying that there were pieces of it far from the crash site, but I never realized the implications of this. Two days ago, a scrapped F-16 Fighting Falcon was put up for an EBay internet auction. The starting price was $1 million. The aircraft was being sold by the Landa Associates firm from Seattle which represents the interests of an anonymous aircraft seller.

When more than 300 applications were received and its price soared up to $99 million, the firm removed the lot and announced that part of the applications were forged. The Pentagon and the FBI are investigating how the scrapped F-16 has become the property of a private company. "
